Volunteering at Overlake Hospital and Medical Center
Overview
I was volunteering at Overlake Hospital and Medical Center for over a year. My main goal of volunteering at this hospital was to get experience because I wanted to apply to nursing school, and this was a great place to learn from. At Overlake hospital I was volunteering every Friday for four hours in the Cancer Ward and PACU. I had to assist nurses in different task such as doing beds, attending patients with their needs, patient transportation, and making company to patients. I would also help with filing paperwork and with organizing files.
My Time at Overlake Hospital!
My time volunteering at Overlake Hospital was a great experience. It was so rewarding volunteering at Overlake because I had so much joy helping patients and making their day happier. It felt very good to help people and to make them feel comfortable during their stay at the hospital. At times it was difficult because a lot of the patients that I was working with were very ill, and some of them died. Over time I was getting to know a lot of the patients, and it was very difficult to come to my next shift and not seeing them any more. This was one of the biggest difficulties I had because I was having a hard time not getting my emotions involved since I am a very empathetic person. I did enjoy helping people and making their day a better one.
I learned that I didn’t want to be a nurse!
Volunteering at Overlake Hospital was great I meet great professionals and people that contributed to my learning experience. One of the things that I learned was that I didn’t want to be a nurse. I learned that to be a nurse you have to be emotionally strong, and that you can’t let you feelings get involved. I also learned valuable skills that will help me be a better Mental Health Counseling such as interpersonal skills, empathy, communication skills, attention to detail, physical endurance, problem solving and quick response. My time at the hospital was great and it was a good learning experience that helped me find my real passion in life.
